get through to – make someone understand

stand up to – resist, challenge

  • My boss was shouting at everyone, but Keith stood up to him and told him he was being unfair.

stand up for – publically defend or support

  • We have to stand up for our rights, and that’s what Monday’s strike is all about.

face up to – accept an unpleasant fact

  • You have to face up to it: he’s never going to change.
