A storm officially becomes a hurricane when cyclone winds reach 119 km/h (74 mph).
Hurricanes, tornadoes and bigger bodies of water have a clockwise rotation in the Southern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. This directional spinning depends on the rotation of the earth and is known as the Coriolis effect or Coriolis force, after French physicist Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis, who described it in 1835
